Why You Should Buy a Sailboat

We can all attest to the allure of the new Beneteau powerboats, like the Monte Carlo and Gran Turismo models. They are sleek and powerful, like something out of a James Bond movie. Other models in the Beneteau powerboat line, like the Swift Trawlers and Antares, are incredibly roomy and functional. It’s no surprise that we sell a lot of these beautiful powerboats here at Cape Yachts, but I must confess, as a die-hard sailor, I think sailboats are also a good choice for many boaters.

"But I Don't Know How to Sail," You Say

You might not realize that you can learn the basics of sailing in a half-dozen sessions on the water. It’s been proven over and over that even someone completely new to sailing can buy a modern cruising sailboat of thirty-five feet or larger and by the end of one New England boating season feel confident enough to sail anywhere. After all, sailing is not rocket science, and there are always qualified instructors available to show you the ropes.

"But Sailing is Too Much Work"

As far as the “work” involved in sailing, it’s been all but eliminated on the new Beneteau sailboats. Roller-furling headsails and in-mast or in-boom furling mainsails are operated from inside the cockpit automatically and by push-button, if you so desire. The technology is so simple that you will know how to work the furling systems after one brief demonstration. If you opt for the self-tacking jib available on some models, there is even less “work” to do while under sail. With the advent of GPS and chart plotters, navigation is certainly not “work” anymore, and the autopilot will do the “work” of steering the boat if you don’t feel like taking the helm. Put it this way; while cruising on one of the new Beneteau sailboats, your time will be spent lounging around and relaxing, not “working.” That’s a guarantee!

"But I Don't Have the Time to Travel That Slowly to Get Somewhere"

If you are on a boat for recreational purposes, then you are essentially on vacation. I ask you, what’s the big hurry? Why not relax and enjoy the quiet peacefulness of sailing while you are getting there? On a sailboat, it’s about the journey, not just the destination. Besides, you are on a yacht on the water with your friends and family, what could be better? Where else would you rather be? The new Beneteau sailboats are much faster than production sailboats have ever been before, so it won’t take as long as you think to get somewhere. This is especially relevant in New England, where there are countless destinations within easy reach. In rough seas, you will always feel more secure in a sailboat, due to the hydrodynamically shaped hull and deep keel. All modern Beneteau sailboat models are equipped with strong and efficient diesel motors to propel them on days when there is no wind, and most have bow thrusters, so maneuvering in tight quarters and docking are stress-free operations.

Sailboats are More Fuel-Efficient to Run Than Powerboats

Your cruising decisions will not be made based on fuel prices and where the next gas dock is located. You won’t be spending a large portion of your boating time in line at the gas dock waiting to take on hundreds of gallons. In this age of great concern for the environment, sailboats are certainly more “green,” and generate much less of a “carbon footprint” than powerboats. In many ways, the modern Beneteau sailboat is the ultimate coastal cruiser.

And last but not least, one more reason to consider a Beneteau sailboat instead of a powerboat for your coastal cruising adventures. The new Beneteau powerboats may be beautiful, but the new Beneteau sailboats are drop-dead gorgeous!
