Whether you're new to yachting or planning your next trip, understanding the basics of boating laws, docking options, and route planning can make your time on the water smoother, safer, and far more enjoyable.

#### Do You Need a License to Drive a Yacht in Massachusetts?
Massachusetts has recently changed its boating laws, and the answer is no longer as simple as it used to be. While the state does not issue a traditional “boating license,” it now requires most operators to complete a **boating safety course and carry a certification**.
#### What Changed in 2026
As of April 1, 2026, the state began rolling out a new law that requires boating education for nearly all operators of motorized vessels, including yachts. This requirement is being phased in over time based on age:
- Boaters **born after January 1, 1989** must complete a safety course by **April 1, 2026**
- Enforcement (including fines) begins **September 1, 2026**
- Boaters **born on or before January 1, 1989** have until **April 1, 2028** to comply
Eventually, all operators will be required to carry proof of certification while operating a motorized vessel on the water.
#### Current Age Restrictions
In addition to the new certification requirement, Massachusetts still enforces age-based boating rules:
- **Under 12 years old:** Cannot operate a motorboat alone
- **Ages 12–15:** May operate with adult supervision or with a safety certificate
- **Ages 16–17:** Must have a boating safety certificate to operate independently
#### Where Can You Take the Course?
Boaters in Massachusetts can complete their required safety certification through a variety of approved options, including both online and in-person courses offered by the Massachusetts Environmental Police and certified providers. #### Hyannis Harbor
#### Hyannis is one of the most accessible and active ports on Cape Cod. It’s a great destination if you're looking for convenience and activity all in one stop. With full-service marinas, easy docking, and a lively waterfront, it’s ideal for boaters who want to step off the boat and immediately enjoy restaurants and shopping. It’s also a natural stopping point if you're cruising through **Buzzards Bay into Nantucket Sound**.
#### Provincetown Marina (Outer Cape)
At the very tip of Cape Cod, traveling to Provincetown by boat offers one of the most scenic and memorable cruising experiences in the region. With a vibrant waterfront, great dining, and access to whale-watching waters, Provincetown is not to be missed. The journey alone makes it worth the trip, especially for those looking for a more adventurous outing.
#### Great Harbor, Woods Hole (Closest to South Dartmouth)
Falmouth/Woods Hole is the closest Cape Cod destination for South Coast boaters, making it an excellent option for shorter, easy trips. It serves as a gateway to **Martha’s Vineyard and Vineyard Sound**, and it’s a popular place to stop for fuel, grab a meal, or prepare for a longer island run.
**Pro tip:** If you're boating out of South Dartmouth, Falmouth is your quickest and most accessible Cape Cod entry point, while Hyannis and Provincetown are better suited for full-day or overnight trips.
#### Cruising Routes from the South Coast

Technically, it is New Shoreman, but for many of us it is simply Block. To the locals it is “The Little Pork Chop." Like an Emerald in the sea, beautiful bike paths, spectacular views and best of all, no chain stores, but for one tiny Ben and Jerry’s. It is refreshing, clean and beautiful. My daughter went to work there for the summer in 2016. She never left. There are stories of pirates and things the locals did with lights ashore, but that is for another time.

It is an undisputed fact that we boat in some of the best cruising grounds in the area (well…undisputed around here anyway). Please voice your opinion and share your thoughts. We would love to hear your best harbor favorites in the New England area and comment on what others have posted. This will be the start of a new series, so please check back often for new comments and posts. We look forward to your thoughts and appreciate topics, such as: navigational issues, boatyard and marina facilities, restaurants, anchorages and favorite happenings ashore. Of course, your least favorite harbors are also welcome. Be sure to join us in discussing both.
### Great Harbor, Massachusetts
Allow me to get the ball rolling. Great Harbor and Eel Pond in Massachusetts are a couple of my favorite spots. You probably have passed this harbor by more times than you realize. [Great Harbor](https://www.usharbors.com/harbor/massachusetts/woods-hole-great-harbor-ma/)sits just north of the Woods Hole passage. You will find the entrance to Great Harbor at buoy # 2 (red) in the actual passage. Leave #2 to your port and then look for Great Harbor buoy # 9 (green), leaving it to port as well. Easy in and easy out…assuming you are paying attention to the swift currents Woods Hole is (in)famous for. Leave plenty of buoy room and you should be fine. Please refer to your charts before attempting.
Once you make your way in, you have a few choices. Anchor in the designated areas (refer to your charts), or call the very friendly [Woods Hole Yacht Club](http://www.woodsholeyachtclub.org/) on channel 69. They may have a mooring available, but they do not provide launch or any kind of services. A dinghy dock, however, sits right in front of the club. If you anchor, do ask permission to leave your dinghy there. It has been our experience that the Woods Hole Yacht Club is one of the friendliest and most charming in New England.
An added bonus is boat-watching the ever-present traffic through “The Hole.” We had the pleasure one Sunday morning, of watching the very impressive New York Yacht Club fleet pass through on their way to Nantucket for their annual cruise.
