The first and probably most important thing, is to think about how you will use your new boat. Consider the following: location, crew, fishing, cruising, etc. Will you be overnighting on the boat? Will you be entertaining or fishing, maybe a combination of both? There is nothing worse than spending too much money or too little, only to find that the wrong boat is at your dock. So, we begin.

How Important is the Speed of Your New Boat?
Most people are initially understating or overstating speed, be realistic based on your use. If you want 20 knots cruise speed, choose 26 knots top speed. As a rule, 20% less will make your boat more efficient and comfortable.
Diesel or Gas, Inboards or Outboards?
All choices here have their advantages and disadvantages. Diesel propulsion is more expensive than gas in the initial purchase, but diesel offers a better range and fuel economy. Make sure you are aware of the differences.
Fall in "Like" with the Boat First!
Fall in “like” first. Just like a good marriage, you “like” the person first, so “like” the boat first. Falling in love should be reserved for AFTER you own the new boat.
Does the Boat Have the Right Sleeping Accommodations?
Remember the kids and their comfort. Believe me, it’s very important. Get aboard the boat. Touch and feel things and get an idea of how the boat will fit with you and your family. Spend as much time as possible getting a feel for the boat and visualize yourself and your family onboard.
Listen to Your Salesman or Broker
Your Salesman or Broker are there to help. Ask lots of questions and get lots of answers. Remember, this is a big investment and you need to get it right the first time. They are there to help you make the right choice.
OK, Now You’re Ready!
With the internet, there is so much information available to you. Use it to your advantage. But remember, a yacht broker or experienced salesperson is without question, the best educated and will provide you with options you might not think of. Let them help you through the process. Yacht Brokers generally deal with pre-owned vessels by listing or selling them, whereas a Yacht Salesman is a title used for yacht sales professionals at new boat dealerships that carry inventory.
Look for the YBAA (Yacht Broker Association of America) and CPYB (Certified Professional Yacht Broker) designations. This means that the broker or salesman is both educated and experienced. He or she maintains a high standard of professionalism acting with honesty and integrity, all to benefit you in your search and purchase of your new yacht.
